Happy Halloween!! Halloween is a fun time of the year because it’s a chance for kids to dress up as their favorite characters and get lots of candy! With all the fun that Halloween brings, it is also the perfect time to serve as a reminder for dental care. Children should start receiving dental care by their first birthday or around six months after they get their first tooth. Routine dental care in children is important to monitor how their teeth are developing, early detection of dental and gum disease, and also treat cavities. It also establishes healthy habits for later in life when adult teeth start coming in! Remember to brush your child's teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time. Limiting sugary foods/drinks and the amount of candy and other snacks can help prevent dental disease.
Here are some ways that can make brushing easier and more enjoyable for both you and your child! Allow children to pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste- one that may have their favorite characters or colors. Play your child’s favorite song and have them brush their teeth until it ends. Make it fun by adding a dance or seeing who can make the funniest faces in the mirror while brushing. Join your child in brushing their teeth- this can be time set aside for you two each day and make them feel extra special!
If you need help finding a dentist who provides pediatric care, don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician for help!
